Herb Flemming Award

Herb Flemming became interested in radio while a student a Houghton College and, after graduation, worked at WYSL, WDCX, and WEBR 970 AM & WBCE, 94.5 FM, which were both owned by Buffalo’s morning newspaper, the Courier Express. Herb served in variously positions as public services, promotion director, production director, and a stint as program director. Herb also served as operations manager for 94.5 FM prior to when it and WEBR were purchase in the 1970’s by Algonquin Broadcasting.

At that time the Courier Express was embarking on building the Courier Cable System to serve the City of Buffalo, Herb remained with the company to help build and market the system. In that time, Herb began a 17-year relationship with NBC Sports, working weekend football games.

After the Courier Cable system was built, Herb joined Tops Markets, Inc. to form an in-house agency that handled their radio, television, and image and reputation management. After twenty years with Tops Markets, he shifted his focus toward public relations and development work and opened his own shop in 2001. Herb is also a licensed Real Estate Salesperson with WNY Metro Roberts Realty.

Herb has served on the Board of the Buffalo Broadcasters Association since the organization’s inception and is one of its founding members. He has been Secretary-Treasurer for most of that time.

The Herb Flemming Award is for an individual who demonstrates a dedication to preserving the history of broadcasting in Western New York.  It is a special award that is not designed to be given every year; only when a person demonstrates their dedication.
